Communications Question for when the SHTF

Hi everyone. I'm looking for a tough, longest range, hand held radio system for when the SHTF. As I'm a bit new to the communications aspect of the SHTF, I need to ask your suggestions on this subject. Any suggestions?
Hand held CB radios vs two-way radios?
What features are a must?
What features are needed?
What features are nice?
Any communications things that are best for privacy?
